Muji box twin IN-17 nixie clock
A really simple clock using two Russian IN-17 tubes
This clock was inspired by a small acrylic pen pot I saw in a MUJI store. "I could build a little clock in that", I thought.
A PCB layout is printed out on a laser printer, ironed onto some circuit board, dumped into the ferric chloride and etched. Drill a few holes here and there, wire up the components and it's more or less done.
I machined a base out of oak and drilled two holes in the acrylic box for switches on the back.
Not perhaps obvious in the picture, but the clock slopes back slightly to aid visibility.
I could make a little cosmetic screen to hide the electronics, with holes for the tubes, but I probably won't bother.
The clock has a variety of modes. In its simplest mode it switches directly between the hours and minutes. In addition it has a fade and dissolve effect, a fade in and out effect and one that scrolls the numbers, a little like tossing two dice. Additional modes select among the other modes every minute or five minutes.
The quicktime movies below show various modes of operation.
